What-to-Wear for: A New Date in the New Year

With 2012 gone and 2013 just starting, many people are trying new things and moving in new directions with their lives. And, many times, people are going out with new, hot dates that they met when the ball dropped. So how do you impress people in your newly refurbished love life? The key is to hit the line between wearing what you love to wear and wearing something classic. When you go on a date, you should wear pieces from your closet that you absolutely love and that make you happy, because they will give you confidence. You can’t throw on everything you love though – sometimes our favorite pieces are just a little too wild to strike the right chord on a first impression. So you need to balance your personal style out with classic, sophisticated pieces that will show off your more mainstream traits, like how you’re responsible, organized, and not crazy. As you get to know each other better and become more comfortable with each other, feel free to wear a rainbow-colored cape like you saw in your “Harper’s,” but during your first encounter, it may be wise to dress a little more subdued.

For this outfit, I took inspiration from what Carrie Bradshaw wore on “Sex and the City” when she arrived at Paris. It’s the perfect blend of classic shapes, on-point trends, and flirty, Parisian-inspired touches. The dress ($32, H&M) is on trend and flattering, and the cute cropped jacket ($29, houseoffraser.co.uk) is the perfect, classic piece to subdue the intense geometrical print of the dress. The tassel earrings and bag are nice flirty touches, and the fabulous red heels ($39, maurices.com) are certain to give you a boost of confidence. Wear with a red lip and you’ll be ready to flirt the night away – just don’t be afraid to be fabulous!
