Half the summer is now gone and it’s time to start thinking about the future ever so often. When looking ahead to ways to update your fall wardrobe, look no further than the Resort 2014 collections. Why? Because practically all of them can sashay seamlessly from the warm summer months to the crisper fall season. A cool blush color is one of the biggest trends from the runways, and you can have it too (without the runway price tag).

Getting the same material as the Valentino look is hard on a budget, but this outfit comes pretty close. Snuggle up in a blush colored sweater from J. Crew and go matchy-match with nice shorts – perfect for going out or to work. Shake up the look with bold flats; try a bright yellow ankle strap version or a fun printed pair. Want something a bit more toned down? Opt for an almost-neutral shoe with this cheetah print flat. Keep the makeup simple (like the model was styled) and keep accessories minimal for a clean aesthetic. A pair of studs and swipe of low key pink or nude lipstick is all you need to finish off this fabulous look.

I’ll admit it – I’m a huge fangirl for many people in the fashion industry. But perhaps my favorite, and the one I like to call my spirit animal, is Derek Blasberg. He came from St. Louis to New York to attend NYU, and worked his way up from assistant to big-name fashion editor. Every week I diligently read his best-dressed list he writes for “Harper’s Bazaar,” and this week he featured a couple of outfits that are perfect to find a low cost spin of.

The polka dots are sweet and cute, but the color palette helps the looks from being too reminiscent of the girls’s grade school years. The best part about the look is that it’s so easy to recreate, even on a tight budget.

Be a little flirty with a polka dot blouse (welikefashion.com, $46) and swirly skater skirt (houseoffraser.co.uk, $23). A nude colored heel is unexpected, and the chain on this one adds a little edge (Zara, $50). Bling it up with a statement necklace (newlook.com, $23), but keep it silver to make the outfit a little more mature.

Try a flowing shift dress with polka dots all over (newlook.com, $26) to look grown-up but with a playful side. Strappy black heels (Zara, $50) and a black and white purse (ebay) are all you need to finish off the look – add some red lipstick if you’re daring, though!

Fabulous Friday: Snow Day!

Nemo is here! A great, big blizzard swept New York today, and this chilly, snowy weather will continue throughout the weekend. Here are some cute outerwear options to keep you warm and leave you with some change for a hot cocoa while you’re on the go!

Ah, the infamous flower. Sarah Jessica Parker single handedly made this a trend as Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City.” Adding a big flower pin to your look is a great, unexpected way to add a burst of spring. It’s innovative, it’s chic, and it’s just plain cute. Add a flower pin to any casual look to step it up and stand out.

Pair a plain tee with distressed jeans and brown leather boots for a comfortable, casual look. Add a little pink flower power to instantly add some umph to your look and make your day brighter!

For a night out or a little date, wear a simple dress with a skater skirt. Pair it with cute heels with bows and an interesting clutch. Pin on a colorful flower  to match the clutch and instantly amp up your style!

It’s as easy as 1-2-3 to add interest to any outfit. Just pin on a cute flower a la Carrie and go! And remember, never be afraid to be fabulous!

Fabulous Friday

My best piece of advice: If you are ever unsure or afraid to do something, put on your big girl pants, slap on a smile, and just go do it!

Last night I was so nervous that I almost didn’t go. But I said to myself, “Honey, you’ve been through a lot of hard things. You’re competent. You can handle this one little opportunity that could give you so much more.” So I went. And it was great.

It was a little event near Times Square in a boutique called “Angelique Bridal.” The designer Sarah Jassir was there (she used to work for Valentino and Vera Wang – AH!) and I met a lot of great people. It was a very little thing, the first event in their new store, and they plan to have something every month. A celebrity makeup artist was there to do a demo and talk to brides about bridal makeup. It was small and easy work, and there wasn’t anyone super famous, but it was a great experience all the same. Everyone was so nice, and I know that I was really lucky to have this be my first experience at a fashion event. I had a lot of my questions answered, got to see how the business really worked, and they even said they’d be contacting the volunteers in the future for more help. The girls I worked with were around my age and all were very nervous at first, too. But we all got along well, and it was fun to talk to girls with similar interests trying to make it in the big City.

The night was inspirational as well. I was proud of myself for going out on a limb and taking a risk. We were told what to do by the man that does Jassir’s PR and sales, and I learned a lot about where to find opportunities from him, and I also was inspired by him to work hard and reach my goals, like he had.

This was by no means a BIG thing (I mean, I didn’t volunteer for McQueen at NY Fashion Week or anything), but it was a wonderful starting point and an exciting night. So, I urge you, take that risk, step out on that limb, and run towards your dreams – don’t be afraid to be fabulous!

Fabulous Friday: Check Mate

Slapping an oversized checkboard print on a shift dress with no waist sounds like a recipe for pure fashion disaster – but Louis Vuitton proved that theory wrong with his new collection.

On paper, it really shouldn’t work. But it just so, so, so does. This is completely chic and I’d bet money it will become a new classic. So, I’m just sitting here, desperately waiting for H&M or anywhere with clothes under $100 to adapt this look so that I can play with it. Maybe I’ll just have to wait until I’m rich and famous.

Here are the very few looks that go along with Vuitton’s genius design. The bustier top paired with the long skirt to create the same effect as the dress? Risky, but it might work. A big, black belt is probably necessary though (it would have a waist and wouldn’t fall like the Vuitton dress anyways, so a necessary sacrifice).

This Fabulous Look – for Less!

Ah, the beginning of awards season. Shake off the seasonal affective disorder that winter brings and join in the fun of voting for best-dressed and yelling at the TV for the what-were-they-thinking’s. To start us off, we had the Critic’s Choice Awards. Now, while many stars looked very glamorous (Anne Hathaway is perfect), one in particular caught my eye.

Marion Cotillard in Zuhair Murad – a little bit different, a little bit grandma, a little bit girly, but completely chic. The black lace mixed with bright floral embellishments just drags me out of the winter blues and gives me hope for spring. Plus, it’s the perfect amount of peek-a-boo and sexy for winter that won’t leave you looking silly and freezing. The nude, classic accessories are the perfect ladylike touches to finish off this fabulous, whimsical look.

Now, to create this look without a celebrity budget is hard – it’s a unique dress that isn’t going to be produced for the millions, because it won’t sell to millions. So instead of looking for one dress that could come close to this (none can), I decided to pair separate lace and floral pieces together.

On the left: I paired a lace peplum top ($32, nelly.com) with a big, floral print skirt ($45, chicwish.com). I would suggest tucking in the shirt, because a peplum on top of everything else may be too much. To go with this more modern take of the look, I picked a modern take on the t-strap heel ($40, newlook.com) and a matching nude clutch with metallic embellishment ($40, mango.com).

Center: For a more classic approach, I paired a simple lace tee ($27, newlook.com) with a more somber and modest floral print skirt ($20, awear.com). As finishing touches, I picked a simple nude sandal ($33, Aldo) and a girly nude flower clutch ($30, DSW).

On the right: Finally, I created a more daring take on the look. I chose a lace skirt ($35, riverisland.com) instead of a lace top, and paired it with a sheer, black blouse with a floral print ($40, boohoo.com), with I would tuck into the skirt to create more of a silhouette. For the shoe, I chose a simple sandal with a neon strap ($27, Forever21) to give it a little pizzazz, and a simple clutch with a skull embellishment ($33, windsorstore.com) to complete the rock and roll feel.

Finish off any of these looks with simple makeup – mascara and a light or bright pink lip are all you need! Bring a little cheer to your winter this year and prepare for spring with happy florals mixed with dramatic lace – you’re sure to look fabulous!
