Call it sculpted, call it rounded shoulders . . . we all know what word this look would bring to mind on us plebeians – “boxy.” While this is a hard look to pull off if you maintain the average BMI or above, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Never one to fight off a runway trend (except for flatforms and the revival of the Birkenstocks), I accepted the challenge of finding a way to attain this look with flattering and frugal results.

Here’s the casual look: boxy tee, skinny (yet boyfriend-esque) jeans, big jewelry, and a surprising red lip. Add boots to toughen it up, or pointed flats (quite similar to the Proenza look, no?) to glam it up.

Or invest in a trendy-meets-classic coat. Military style, cropped for fall or spring, or big and comfy with rounded shoulders – here’s how to fix them up. Ladies, a belt is your best friend. Keep it neutral with just a little shine for a minimalist feel. It’ll cinch in the waist, helping you escape the dreaded “I’m a box” effect, but it will also accentuate the sculpted shoulders, making you look couture on a budget. Now comes the fun part: statement jewelry. Every girl needs a big statement necklace or collar (I suggest checking out Aldo accessories… buy one get one free!), or channel your inner Dolce & Gabbana with big, colorful earrings.

Have fun with this trend, and remember – don’t be afraid to be fabulous!

Valentino, Spring 2013.

Take this great midi-length skirt ($38, Modcloth.com) and pair with a simple white button down ($22, Mango.com). Layer with a peach blouse ($62, johnlewis.com). If it’s too hot for double layers, or you’re just not feeling a stiff, collared shirt, try a ladylike blouse with a sexy keyhole accent ($46, oasis-stores.com).Simple, nude, peep-toe pumps ($45, Mango.com) will do the trick to finish off this look, or add a modern twist with an open, color blocked sandal ($29, theiconic.com.au). Valentino kept its vintage looks fresh on the runway with statement clutches in contrasting colors and textures, so try something with a wild edge (Red clutch, $26, liveclothing.com.au) or with some shine (Silver clutch, $45, chictastic.com). Keep other accessories sweet and minimal, and use natural hair and makeup, like Valentino did for the runway.

Looking ladylike is always in, but it’s becoming the trend recently. On the runways and on style stars there has been more left to the imagination and less bared for all to see. So keep it classy, and remember to always keep it fabulous!

Trending Tuesday: Go for Graphic

There has been a definite revival of neutrals in recent seasons, and the Spring 2013 runway was no different. Colors are great, but sometimes a graphic black and white ensemble is just necessary. It’s majorly cutting edge to take stark designs of pure black and pure white, mix prints, and keep the accessories neutral, too. If you’re going for a pop of color, choose from one in the primary color swatch. Sometimes bringing it back to the basics can turn out oh so right.

Keep it cool and chic by mixing graphic printed pants ($46, riverisland.com) with a striped button down ($31, 2dayslook.com). Pair with black wedges with a metallic edge (wholesale-dress.net), a cool wood-inspired bag, and both classic and edgy accessories to keep the look fresh. For a sweeter look, opt for printed pants ($46, riverisland.com) and a subtle, polka dot, baby-doll top ($40, welikefashion.com). Black chunky sandals ($46, H&M) are perfect for the transition from winter to spring, and a pop of pure blue is just right to liven up the look.

Go graphic this spring and make a splash without a single color if you’d like – anything’s possible with fashion! Be playful, and don’t forget to be fabulous!
