Call it sculpted, call it rounded shoulders . . . we all know what word this look would bring to mind on us plebeians – “boxy.” While this is a hard look to pull off if you maintain the average BMI or above, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Never one to fight off a runway trend (except for flatforms and the revival of the Birkenstocks), I accepted the challenge of finding a way to attain this look with flattering and frugal results.

Here’s the casual look: boxy tee, skinny (yet boyfriend-esque) jeans, big jewelry, and a surprising red lip. Add boots to toughen it up, or pointed flats (quite similar to the Proenza look, no?) to glam it up.

Or invest in a trendy-meets-classic coat. Military style, cropped for fall or spring, or big and comfy with rounded shoulders – here’s how to fix them up. Ladies, a belt is your best friend. Keep it neutral with just a little shine for a minimalist feel. It’ll cinch in the waist, helping you escape the dreaded “I’m a box” effect, but it will also accentuate the sculpted shoulders, making you look couture on a budget. Now comes the fun part: statement jewelry. Every girl needs a big statement necklace or collar (I suggest checking out Aldo accessories… buy one get one free!), or channel your inner Dolce & Gabbana with big, colorful earrings.

Have fun with this trend, and remember – don’t be afraid to be fabulous!

Leather is always in – bonus, where it in the fall with tights and booties! Or go for a more laid-back look with the polka dot trend.

The best part about all of these cute shorts? Their price! Pick a few and you’re sure to look fabulous all summer long.

Trending Tuesday: Look Electric Cool in Electric Blue

From HarpersBazaar.com.

From HarpersBazaar.com.

Taking some inspiration from the Cannes Film Festival street style, I put together a couple of outfits featuring electric blue and stark white. I love the high contrast, and it’s a more colorful alternative to graphic black and white for spring.

Keep it casual and cool with a cool blue crop top and white capri-length jeans. Add thick-soled sneakers and gold bangles to keep it edgy. Get a more girly look with a pretty, detailed top and white flares – pair with brown booties and a beaded bracelet to add a little country. Wear blue to a more formal outing with a blue bodysuit, worn with a white skater skirt over it. Add contrasting heels (with an ankle strap for bonus trendy points!) and a gold chain necklace to keep it elegant with a modern twist.

Trending Tuesday: Skulls Are for Everyone

Remember those days when skulls were only seen in Hot Topic and were only worn by punks and hard rock kids? Well, those days are long gone, thanks in part to McQueen, Gaultier, and other famous designers that helped to usher the punk aesthetic back in high fashion. This is now trickling down to the masses (us fabulous poor people), and it can be oh so chic and tough. I’m really diggin’ channeling the chill rocker girl with a skull t-shirt and spiky accessories. Take this trend out for a spin, and who knows – maybe you’ll find your inner rock diva.

Try a skull tank out for starters – I love how it’s still a bit flirt, because it’s a tank, but hardcore and edgy because of the printed skulls. Accessories are probably the best way to ease into the trends if you’re hesitant. Try a budget-friendly take on the McQueen skull scarves, with options available at Asos and TopShop, and others! Throw on my skull-accented bangles and bracelets, rings and necklaces to add a sweet touch of gothic style.

Try a few of H&M’s new pieces that have an edgier feel. They have skull-printed high-low skirts and skull emblazoned dresses, and enough punk jewelry to keep any fashionista satisfied. They also have some great scarves with little skull jewels attached at the ends – the perfect, small touch of punk for the fabulous girl with a more girly style.

What-to-Wear with: Short-Shorts

It’s getting warmer (at least, that’s we keep telling ourselves here in the Northeast) and more heat means less clothing. So how do you keep cool and get tan without looking like you just stepped out of a Britney Spears video? (One of the old ones, of course.) The key is to keep it casual, so you don’t look like you were trying to look like someone from a Britney Spears video.

Try some of the new shorts trends: hardcore punk (acid washed, studded, H&M), ombré (if your hair can’t pull it off, maybe your legs can), and floral (who doesn’t want to be covered in flowers in the spring and summer?). Pair punk shorts with a rebellious tee, preferably fringed at the bottom and spiked bangles. Keep things simple with ombré shorts – pull on a neutral sweater for chilly nights by a bonfire, or a simple graphic tee for sunny days. With floral shorts, wear a lace tank for a girly look, or throw people off guard by pairing it the aforementioned rebellious tank. And, my obsession for this summer: bangles. Pile them on high (unless you’re tanning) and colorful. Have fun taking cues from different cultures with your accessories this summer – who said a fabulous poor girl can’t at least look like she went somewhere exotic (and pricey).

Trending Tuesday: Cropped Delights

Just when you think global warming has messed everything so much that you’ll never see your favorite season again, the sun suddenly pops out and it’s 80 degree weather. So how do you beat this heat? With a little ’90s revival known as: the crop top. Yes, it’s scary, and yes, a lot of trashy celebs wear them in the absolute worst ways. But there are a few ways to rock this look without looking like a paler version of Snooki.

Possibly the easiest way to pull it off: a high-waisted skirt and a tie crop top. The tie makes it look less deliberate, and the high-waisted skirt covers more skin so that you don’t look as… college girls on spring break. Wear with cute sandals and a graphic clutch to make it a little more modern.

While this look is a bit more risqué, the baggy boyfriend jeans and cool cardigan save the tight, white, crop top turtleneck from being too much. This look is almost granny chic, with a little bit of sexy thrown in. Add lace tennis shoes and gold, classic bangles to add a little flair.

Finally, you can layer a crop top over a dress. Take a simple, strapless dress that you want to wear more, but can’t make work for class or casual looks. Throw on a simple crop top, a lacy tank for a more girly look, or a gray cropped tee to give your look a sporty edge. Wear with neutral flats or cute printed wedges. Add a printed, bright clutch to make it a little more chic, and throw on a big cuff to complete the perfect spring look.

Crop tops CAN be your friends, if you use them wisely. So don’t be afraid and throw one on – you’ll be lookin’ fabulous!

What to Wear with: Neon

It’s the first day of spring! (Hopefully it starts feeling like spring soon . . .) What better way to celebrate then to talk about a trend as colorful as neon. I’m not a huge fan of over-the-top neon (too much can look too trashy). But in cute pieces with tasteful structures, neon can be a huge hit. Try to work a pop of color into your wardrobe this spring with these outfit ideas:

Make casual day looks fun with a bright yellow top. Wear with white jeans and cork wedges to keep it sophisticated and bright. Or try a button down with lace accents in a bold hue, like neon orange. Make a daring (but refined) entrance by pairing it with a black skater skirt with leather trim and bow-adorned mary-jane heels. This pink peplum dress with an open back is the real showstopper. Keep it interesting with these fabulous printed heels from the Prabal Gurung for Target line.

Keep your spring bright and cheerful, even if it’s still gray and cold, with these fabulously fun looks. Just don’t forget your best accessory – confidence!
